Southside Partnership

I was responsible for the overall management and strategic direction of Southside Partnership Group (Southside), a registered charity and company limited by guarantee with an annual turnover of 6 million and staffing complement of 170. Operating in London and the Southern Home Counties, Southside provides services for people with mental health needs and learning disabilities through a range of registered care homes, supported living schemes, community outreach, tenancy sustainment and day services.

Southside's subsidiary, Southside Partnership Fanon Care (Fanon), provides culturally specific support for African and Caribbean people with mental health needs through residential, tenancy sustainment and day services.

In addition, we set up Scotch Bonnet, a social enterprise providing Caribbean food through buffets and hospital meals.


Riverpoint was a homelessness charity and limited company with its origins as a nightshelter in Hammersmith,. Prior to my departure, with a budget of 3m and staffing complement of 70, I was instrumental in a merger partnership with Housing Services Agency (HSA). Riverpoint and HSA formally merged in April 2002 to become Broadway, now one of London's largest homelessness agencies.

Threshold Housing Advice

At Threshold I was Co-Director responsible for Finance, Admin and Personnel in two advice centres in Hammersmith and Wandsworth giving advice to single homeless people. I had direct line management for 7 staff - administrative/finance staff, project staff and the HIV/AIDS team - and indirect line management for a further 15, operating within a budget of 1m.

Local Government

Westminster City Council

At Westminster, I was PA to the Leader of the Opposition. I handled all the constituency casework, conducted research into policy areas and wrote related papers. I was responsible for press and media relations including drafting press releases, arranging press conferences and photo calls, fielding press enquiries to relevant councillors.

Hammersmith & Fulham Council

Community Development Worker, responsible for developing a Community Resource Centre for local community groups, working with the local community on an estate overhaul and working on the then government's Inner Area Programme (Urban Renewal), securing resources for the development of the local community with the local voluntary sector.

Voluntary Sector

Associate Director (Lay Member) Kingston & District Mental Health NHS Trust until the Trust's merger with St George's (1999-2001)

The role was voluntary and in conjunction with the Non Executive Directors on the Board, Associate Directors sat on panels to hear appeals against sections under the Mental Health Act and visited the Trust's services periodically for quality assurance purposes.

Board Member of Homeless Network (1993-1997 and 1999-2001)

Margaret was on the Board of Homeless Network during its period of expansion and also during the period of merger with National Homeless Alliance, which resulted in the formation of Homeless Link, the now national homelessness charity.

Management Committee Member of St Mungo's Association, London (2002-2003)

General Committee member helping the organisation steer its direction.

Founder Member of Off the Streets and Into Work (1995-1998)

Margaret was a founder member of this innovative charity whose mission was to help homeless people into training and work, helping them to get out of the spiral of social exclusion. In particular, she engaged the services of the Chairman of a national recruitment agency to help formulate the business plan for the employment agency part of the work, which subsequently became Centrebody, then Safe in the City.

National Day Centres Project Steering Group Member (1999-2001)

The NDP Steering Group was part of the former National Homeless Alliance (which merged with Homeless Network to become Homeless Link). Margaret was a pivotal member in advocating for the place of Day Centres as essential support for homeless people, in particular rough sleepers.

Various Neighbourhood Initiatives (1975-1985)

These included the formation and development of a Housing Co-operative, being an elected neighbourhood councillor, co-chairing an annual community carnival and serving on the committees of several youth clubs.
